Cavalry Encampment.

Custer's Last Ride/Little Bighorn Adventure. Garryowen, MT ($1,875**) June 18-25, 2017. Arrival is usually Saturday evening (flying into Billings Airport). Departures are usually the next Monday morning after training ends for those flying. Early/late arrivals and departures acceptable. Veteran/Military, Group, and returnee Student discounts available. Bring your own or rent one of our HORSES, UNIFORMS, WEAPONS, or McCLELLAN SADDLE KITS.

*Program fee includes tuition, training fees, meals, and barrack/field encampment. **Program fee includes tuition, training fees, meals, blank/live ammunition, barrack/field tent encampment lodging, living history tours, battlefield classes, and more. Discounts available for students that are veterans/current military members and former graduates. Call for details.

  $500 Deposit due date is March 15th. For 2017, first 28 reservations have guaranteed spot, all others with be placed on waiting list. US Military Veterans discount available. There is a $125 fee for cancelling reservation after May 10th (emergencies; i.e. medical may waive the fee). Payment in full (Tuition, Rentals if applicable: Horse/Tack/Uniform/Firearm) is to be received by May 25th for June courses. All Fees and prices are subject to change. Riding Experience:

Level 0, I have never been on a horse, or have ridden very little.

Level 1, I have ridden, but am a beginner rider. I can control a responsive horse at walk and possibly the trot in a controlled arena/trail ride.

Level 2, I have ridden, but am a novice rider. I can control a responsive horse at walk and trot in a arena or on an open trail, possibly a canter (lope).

Level 3, I am an intermediate rider. I can ride beginner -intermediate horses and in some difficult terrain at walk, trot, canter, and run.

Level 4, I am an experienced rider (can ride intermediate horses in difficult terrain and at walk, trot, canter, run).

Level 5, I am an expert rider with jumping, mounted firearms, or very difficult terrain experience and at all gaits with all types of horses.

Cavalry Mount:

I will bring my own horse.

I will not bring a horse and will need to rent one on my arrival ($425/week). Those wishing to fully participate in the riding portion of the training should be able to mount and dismount with little (i.e. horse holder, regular mounting block) or no assistance. This riding adventure has a limit of 265 lbs. for riding horses. Call for specifics and questions.<

 

Uniform/Equipment Items:

 

Tack:

I will provide my own historical horse tack and saddle. If using your own Cavalry Tack, additional pieces may be available for rent to dress out your saddle for missions, reenactment, and parades (i.e. canteen, surcingle, breast collars, grain bag, nose bag, cinch, canvas/blanket rolls).

I will rent cavalry tack and saddle on my arrival ($175/week).

 

Firearms: Students will be able to shoot the School's weapons of the period (45LC Single Action, 45-55 Trapdoor Springfield and possibly more) at the Firing Range; as well as the 45LC mounted shooting course - no matter what firearm they rent. Rentals are for use during training, riding missions, and reenactment.

I will rent a cavalry pistol on my arrival (Select- ______ $40 Cap and Ball, _____ $45 - new Blank Firing 45LC replica Pistol (safest) or ______ $95 45LC revolver. During live fire at Ft Custer and Cross country mounted balloon course, 45LC pistols will be used by all, no matter what item they rented. Rental pistols are for training periods, riding patrols/missions, and reenactment. Due to our limited number of 45 LC pistols rentals available and they will be on a first come (reserved), first served basis. Encourage all to consider the $45 rental pistol. There may be a few 45-70 Trapdoor Carbines available for rent. We have some rubber replicas of 45LC pistols and 45-70/45-55 Springfield trapdoor carbines available.

 
 

Uniform & Personal Equipment:

I will provide my own period cavalry uniform* and personal equipment.

I will rent a cavalry uniform* on arrival ($125/week). Write No or the Sizes: Pants ______(ex. 36Wx34L) List pant measurement 2 sizes bigger (measure at navel, as period pants are higher) for comfort!! Uniform Rental includes 1 cotton pair for Sun-Wed and 1 wool pair for Thurs-Sun. Shirt/Coat ______(ex. XL/48 or 17 X 34), Hat ____(71/8, 71/4, 7 1/2), Boot ____(Sz 10.5) Save $25 off rental by bringing your own black cav belt and holster. Check, If: ____ I need a belt. ______ I need a holster. There are limited number and sizes of Cavalry boots for rent, reserve yours early. Bringing your own black riding boots could be a substitute and more confortable. *Students are in training to be Cavalry Troopers of the 1870s, uniforms provided will be in the rank of Trooper (private). This allows new students to identify leaders/instructors for requesting help and questions by rank. Students providing their own uniforms should attend course as Troopers without rank (special circumstances may apply, call for questions).<

 

Lodging:

I will stay in the U.S. Cavalry School barracks and field encampment. If taking a Little Bighorn Course, this will be a Cavalry Tent encampment with cots and pads on the Banks of the river. Pillows not provided. Those driving in should bring their own sleeping bags; those flying in can request a sleeping bag or bring their favorite. _____ I will be bringing my own sleeping bag. or ______ I will need a sleeping bag from US Cavalry School. If flying in, let us know your Airline, Flight number, dates and times of arrival and departure by the 1st of June if using our shuttle service.
